How does a gap arise?
The aim of OASI and the pension fund is to replace together about 60 percent of the last salary. OASI is capped, though, at most CHF 2,520 a month for individuals. And the pension fund often does not insure the whole salary. Anyone who earns well, works part-time or has had breaks is therefore often below it.
How do you close it?
- Pillar 3a. Pay in every year, as early as possible.
- Buy-in to the pension fund. Attractive for tax, but the money is locked in.
- Close OASI gaps. You can only catch up missing contribution years five years back.
- Free saving and investing. Flexible, without a tax deduction.
What does that mean in francs?
With a salary of CHF 90,000, 70 percent is around CHF 5,250 a month. If OASI and pension fund together bring CHF 4,400, you are missing around CHF 850 a month. Calculate above with your numbers.
What many people get wrong
- “OASI and the pension fund replace my salary.” Not fully for most people. 60 percent is the target, not the minimum.
- “In old age I need much less.” Housing costs, health and travel often stay high.
- “I will take care of retirement provision later.” The later, the more expensive it is to close a gap.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I see how much I will get in old age?
The pension fund pension is on your pension statement. You can get an estimate of your OASI pension from your compensation office.
Where do gaps come from?
Often from part-time work, breaks because of children or further training, years abroad, a low salary or a low conversion rate of the pension fund.
What is a buy-in to the pension fund?
If you have gaps in the pension fund, you can pay in voluntarily and deduct the amount from your taxes. How much is possible is on the pension statement. After that the money is locked for three years for a capital withdrawal.
