Which insurances do you need in your flat?
In short
In a rented flat you mainly need two insurances.
Household contents insurance for your belongings and personal liability for damage to others. The owner insures the building. Against storms you are protected through fire and natural hazard cover, against earthquakes usually not.

Who insures what?
| What | Insurance | Who takes it out |
|---|---|---|
| Your furniture, clothes, devices | Household contents insurance | You |
| Damage you cause to others | Personal liability | You |
| Building, roof, windows, facade | Building insurance | Owner |
| Glass such as a ceramic hob or basin | Glass breakage, depending on the policy | You or the owner |
What matters?
- The right sum. A household contents sum that is too low cuts every claim.
- Rental damage. It should be included in your personal liability.
- Theft away from home. Bike, phone and laptop are only insured outside the home with an extension.
- Check after every move. Bigger flat, more belongings, a different sum.
