What changes with premiums in 2027?
The premium is the amount you pay every month for basic health insurance. In 2027 it rises by 5 percent on average to 412 francs a month. This is what the Federal Office of Public Health reported on 29 September 2026.
This is an average. Your own premium can be higher or lower. It depends on your canton, insurer, age, deductible and model.
What does that mean in francs?
On average you pay about 19.70 francs more per month. The sum is simple. 19.70 francs times twelve months is 236.40 francs more per year.
For adults, the average monthly premium rises by 22.80 francs to 487.60 francs. For two adults that is 45.60 francs more per month on average, or 547.20 francs per year.
When do you find out your premium?
Your insurer must tell you your new premium by 31 October at the latest. After that you have until 30 November to send your notice. It must reach the insurer by then. It is best to send it by registered mail and to allow a few days to spare.
What can you do now?
- Check your deductible. The deductible is the amount you pay yourself first when you get treatment. A higher deductible lowers your premium. It pays off if you rarely see a doctor.
- Check your model. With a family doctor, HMO or Telmed model, you first go to a fixed point of contact. In return, your premium is lower.
- Compare insurers. The benefits of basic insurance are set by law and are the same everywhere. In the federal premium calculator you see all insurers for your region.
- Look into premium reduction. If your income is low or middle, your canton supports you.
An example shows what a switch can bring. Say you find an insurer that costs 40 francs less per month for the same model and the same deductible. You save 480 francs a year. That is more than twice the average increase.
What many people get wrong
- “A rising premium means better benefits.” Wrong. The benefits of basic insurance stay the same.
- “I have to switch if my premium rises.” Wrong. You can stay if you do nothing.
- “The postmark is enough.” Wrong. Your notice must reach the insurer by 30 November.

Frequently asked questions
Does the average apply to my premium too?
Not exactly. The increase differs by canton, insurer, deductible and model. You see your own premium in the letter from your insurer.
Do I have to do anything if my premium rises?
No. If you do not give notice, you stay with your insurer. A comparison still pays off, because basic insurance benefits are the same at every insurer.
Until when can I switch for 2027?
Your notice must reach your current insurer by 30 November. What counts is the day it arrives, not the postmark.
Can my canton help me with premiums?
Yes. People with low and middle incomes can get a premium reduction. You find the rules and the application at your canton.
